Pic(k) of the week - A Mother’s Love {National Women’s Day}

Chantelle Fourie & her beautiful family. YSP

A mother’s love can conquer and overcome anything that life can bring you.

I met Chantelle in 2003 and from the first day she treated me like an old family friend. Her genuine kindness and warmth made a big impression on me. Chantelle and her husband, were blessed with two beautiful children. Their son, Hanno, was diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy in August 2011. Hanno suffers from the same disease as Springbok, Joost van der Westhuizen. Please visit Hanno’s Facebook page and his website to read more about his condition or to show your support.

Chantelle’s strength and unconditional love through the difficult times has inspired me. She is an invincible mother and magnificent woman.

Pic(k) of the week - Courage {National Women’s Day}

Celebrating women that inspire & lead by example.

I am writing out of a cosy office while it is pouring outside. Feeling lucky that I am a woman, wife and daughter. From this week until the end of August I will share with you ladies that inspire me. The 9th of August is National Women’s Day.

I photographed this beautiful woman a while ago in my studio. Her story is personal, but I can tell you that it took a lot of courage for her to appear in her swimsuit. Her strength inspires me to be proud of my body.

If you would like to share your story on the women that inspire you, please email me at yolande@ysp.co.za. I would love to post it.

Wishing you a warm & happy weekend x

Pic(k) of the week - {Artist - Theo Paul Vorster}

I had a very busy week filled with art, lifestyle shoots and Jenny Morris’ jewellery range launch at freeRange Jewels.

The highlight was artist, Theo Paul Vorster’s walkabout at Rust en Vrede Art Gallery, in Durbanville. I love his work and have already built up a beautiful collection over the years. Theo, did two demonstrations on lino printing and on etching. Also taking us through the gallery to tell us more about his current exhibition. My favourite print is Suspended II. (See the original lino right.)

What I love about winter is the promise of spring and the beautiful light. Also the quiet time between wedding seasons, which is perfect to recharge creatively and to spend quality time with family and friends.

The past week I have been feeling very restless, really wanting to take the open road and explore our country. So I dedicate this week’s Pic(k) of the week to my inner adventurer.

For roadtrip inspiration listen to Lana Del Rey’s Ride.

Our greatest glory is, not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.” - Confucius

It has been a month since my last Pic(k) of the Week post. We have suffered the loss of my grandmother and my father in law in May.

It is a difficult process to start the day with heartache, feeling actual pain. Proving that the person you have lost meant so much to you. I have learned that life does goes on. It is a matter of feeling the emotions, but going about your daily routine. Faith and support from family, friends and clients have also helped in this slow process of picking up the pieces and starting to move on.

My grandmother has been more than just a grandmother to me. Ouma Jessie inspired me. Introducing me to photography, art and nature.

Ouma, thank you for all your love and for believing in me. I miss you so much. x

Pic(k) of the week - {Be Scared, but take Chances}

The day after Surene & Thinus’ wedding, my husband Jacques, close friend Nic, new friend Pieter & I went for an adventurous walk from Pebble- to Blue Lagoon beach in the Agulhas National Park to reward ourselves with a swim. Something I haven’t done in a long time. Wearing a cozzie is not on my list of top ten favourite things to do.

I only gave the turquoise blue water one look and found myself in the water with my Nikon Coolpix S30. A little blue bottle graciously past me. The beauty of how it floated on the ripples of the tide, this delicate creature that can cause major pain, just made me realize that things that might hurt you in life can also be made harmless. It is all in the way you look at it. Be scared, but take chances. Wear your swimming costume and explore the world.

Happy Easter!!! Have a blessed time with family & friends. Drive safe. x

There is a harmony in autumn, and a luster in its sky, which through the summer is not heard or seen, as if it could not be, as if it had not been! - Percy Bysshe Shelley

When I look out my office window and see the leaves change colour, I feel both happy and sad. The orange hues creeping up on the green leaves announces Autumn is in the air. I love the “light” that this season brings. Making life seem more vivid.

Why, sad? I am going to miss the warm Summer evenings.

Kaylin looks up to her mom.

Lately I have noticed how people have become more negative about our country, international stars & life. I believe that we should stop looking to others to bring us happiness & rather look closer to home. Put your trust in role models you can believe in, people you know. Your father, mother, brother, friend, etc.

Live by example. Actions speak louder than words.

Image from Lisa & Duncan’s engagement photo shoot at the Taal Monument, Cape Town.

I am back in the office today after a wonderful holiday with my family & friends. To be honest, I might still be sitting on the beach with my feet in the sand, in my mind, but I am glued to my chair in my office. Answering emails and editing, with my desk fan blowing in my hair. (Which is also just as good.)

This week’s Pick of the week sums up all that I wish for you for 2013. May all your hopes and dreams come true & may love find you in unexpected ways. Here’s to a new year filled with new opportunities & adventures. Cheers!

Turning 30 - Celebrating Life & Photography {7 Aug 2012}

Celebrating Life and Photography with Talented Friends

To celebrate thirty years of life, and a few of them well spent as photographer, Yolande Snyders invited a hotchpotch of talented friends to Studio Rose on Tuesday, for a morning of industry mingling and motivation.

In what was truly a fun and light-hearted event, photographers, videographers, graphic designers and writers came together as a group of individuals who share in a passion to provide their clients with excellent service. Each with their own, unique story as to where and how they came about in the industry of being a creative, the room was filled with specialists who inspire by doing.

Wedding photographer Kobus Tollig was asked to share his ideas on an art form that has literally moved him across the country and out of different careers to follow his dreams. He gave a compelling speech that explained what his work means to him saying, “Photography is so much more than just taking an award-winning photograph. It gives us the chance to view the world in a different light. Photography teaches us how to do business –how to create a website, manage social media pages and market services. All this help us to develop self-leadership. ”
For him, the client is the driving force behind his beautiful and captivating work, and he encouraged guests to share this mindset. “It’s not about me. It’s about making the bride or model look their most beautiful on that special day. Getting a compliment from a client is so much more rewarding than winning Photo of the Week.”

His speech motivated those in attendance to keep going during times of hardship –because, in the creative world there are many –and to “love what you do, no matter what you do. If you feel inspired when you do it, you’re on the right path. We all have bills to pay, I know. I have a little one that I have to buy diapers for. But I love what I do and I’ll do whatever it takes. Changing careers was the best thing I had ever done.”
So, why is it that we find the success stories of others so inspiring? I for one believe that when you know it, it’s yours. As Frank Capra once said, “A hunch is creativity trying to tell you something”. Kobus’s story is merely one of many reassuring if you act on your creative ideas, you’ll never be out of work. If you have a hunch, do something about it –no matter how crazy it may seem. And enjoy the ride.

I would like to congratulate Yolande on her special day, and thank her for being such an inspiration to myself and all guests of this inspiring event that celebrated being a creative, despite all the challenges that comes along with it. May every snapshot of your life be filled with love, happiness and laughter!

For your camera bag - Memory Card Case.

When you are in the business of capturing special moments or shooting for high end commercial clients, you will want to safeguard your memory cards. I just love the Vanguard memory card case. Durable and easy to use. The memory card case keeps your memory cards organized. You can number your memory cards so that you can work systematically through them when shooting. Never getting confused about which card is full and which ready for shooting.

These handy holders are available from Cameraworld. For the price it is a bargain, seeing as it stores memory cards with your valuable images on it. Your images are your income.

The following steps are my basic memory “make & save” cycle. Repeat steps 2 to 7 before and after every shoot.

Step 1 - Buy a trusted brand of Memory Cards at your specialist photographic equipment dealer.
Step 2 - Test your memory cards and format them before using them at a big event.
Step 3 - Number your memory cards.
Step 4 - Store memory cards in the card holder.
Step 5 - Shoot you heart out and fill memory cards with beautiful images.
Step 6 - Do a back up of all your memory cards as soon as possible after the shoot.
Step 7 - Catalog all your images. I prefer Microsoft Expression Media 2.

Happy Shooting. x

For your camera bag - Fun stuff

Here are a few affordable products & gadgets for your camera bag if you shoot weddings that I find essential. These items come in handy when you least expect it.

Also, remember to have an identification card in your camera bag.

1. Business Cards - {by Pink Pigeon} - You might get an enquiry at a wedding.

2. Hand Cleanser - Just after the bridal couple have enjoyed their first piece of wedding cake, you will have something for sticky hands.

3. Wet Wipes - Always handy.

4. Cable ties - Something to keep your cables organized.

My favourite!

5. Labels by Nikon to mark your equipment. Small sticker that can make a big difference.

6. Pocket Tissues - You are the only one following the bride & groom the whole day, be there for them in case of a teary moment.

7. Pocket Towel - Once at a beach engagement shoot I had the couple walking through shallow waves, they were very happy to dry their feet afterwards. Footnote {pun intended} - Baby powder is a great sand remover.

8. Plastic bags - For keeping things dry or separated.

9. Fresh & Sweet - Tic Tacs are my favourite, especially the orange flavour. I like them because you can share them with the couple, no chewing gum to be disposed of and they taste great. Not as overpowering as mints.

10. Desert Rose Hanger - A gorgeous wedding dress should hang on something special.

PS: Follow this link for an awesome battery holder.

We visited Swellendam in March and we will definitely go back to see more of this beautiful town. Thank you to Braeside Guest House for making us feel at home.
